If you’ve seen the previews for this movie, you had a chance to see that the cast of Strange Wilderness seems to bring together three hilarious actors who all belong to different comedy troops. You’ve previously seen Steve Zahn (Peter) in Saving Silverman, Allen Covert (Fred) in I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry, and Jonah Hill (Cooker) in Superbad. Sounds awesome, right? It gets even better when you realize it’s produced by Happy Madison Productions, which coincidently has brought us movies like Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison. From every preview I saw and all the information above, this movie looked like a pee your pants comedy. Surprisingly, it didn’t deliver.
Although comedy in movies has degraded to more of a stoner quality of comedy, it’s hard to except that as an excuse for where this movie fell short. The three movies that I mentioned the lead actors had also been in prove that you don’t need to simply target that audience and not everything funny has been though up yet. At times I did get a few genuine laughs here and there, but to be honest, the group of high school stoners next to me kept me even more entertained than the movie. I thought that they were just laughing at any random thing, but when I paid more attention I realize that they were actually following the movie.
The movie itself is about a failing animal tv show that needs to drastically increase it’s ratings. How better to do that then to actually find BigFoot and put him on the show. I’m not sure where I missed the concept of having to alter my state of reality to enjoy a movie, but apparently that’s how the movie was intended as there is no other way that I could possibly fathom how those three actors with that studio would flop like that.
If your a patient enjoying medicinal medicines, consider renting this movie before it’s time for your medicine.
